Feeding Philly is a student-led organization that works to combat food waste and insecurity in our schools and communities through the development of mutual aid programs and educational empowerment.
Their most prominent in-school mutual aid program is their Collect and Repurpose Excess program. In this program, they use a community fridge to collect breakfast and lunch items throughout the school day that students would throw out otherwise, and allow other students to take them instead. The fridge is located on our school’s campus and ran by other students from the school who check on the fridge multiple times a day to make sure that the items inside are safe to eat. They also clean the fridge once a week to ensure the freshness of all of their food. They plan to eventually donate all excess, usable items that are in our fridge at the end of the week to an external community fridge (one that is not connected to Feeding Philly). Beyond CARE, Feeding Philly dedicates their time to numerous projects and events to promote food security in their local Ogontz neighborhood and the greater area of Philadelphia. Each month, they host a free food distribution in North Philadelphia in which they re-purpose fresh produce to serve their local community. As of March 17th, 2023, they have additionally functioned as a chapter of the non-profit organization Sharing Excess, who shares our goal of fighting food waste and insecurity. Sharing Excess provides the fresh produce for each of our events. As of July 2023, they have served over 1,500 families and plan to provide for many more! They prioritize community education too as they understand that awareness is the most powerful tool for making meaningful and sustainable change. They have worked with Restorative Justice coaches and teachers throughout the city to develop a Feeding Philly curriculum that introduces students to food waste and insecurity and how they can get involved with Feeding Philly to address these issues. They now educate our peers at Central through monthly workshops and are working to bring this curriculum to schools across the city. They have attended local and national conferences to present and develop these lesson plans and establish new chapters of Feeding Philly. 2 Feeding Philly Articles and Website Article 1 Article 2 www.feedingphilly.org/ |
