Overcoming Objections to Food Recovery in Schools
Weekly Storage / Refrigeration
When starting K-12 Food Rescue in your school, you may encounter objections., and while they are covered in our
open letters to school administrators, an additional objection is lack of refrigeration space for rescued food items.
Food Rescue supports our local community by providing free refrigerators while funds last to schools in Indianapolis and surrounding areas from grants provided by local funding sources. For schools outside of Indianapolis, we have prepared sample funding campaign ideas when limited refrigeration space is an objection.

Strategies to Obtain a Refrigerator for your Food Recovery Program
- Perform a food waste audit and take photos of how much food is wasted each day.
- Take that number of food items x 180 days to get a total estimated food items rescued each year.
- Using the K-12 Food Rescue Story Graphic Log Tool, add a photo of a student with consent of a parent next to the photo of the food, and add the yearly estimated food rescued to the total
- Using the image from the K-12 Food Rescue Story Graphic Log Tool, form a team of parents to market that photo and express the need to raise $500 to purchase the refrigerator.
- Food Rescue’s experience is that there are many people willing to support K-12 Food Rescue efforts through the purchase of refrigeration equipment.
- While not required, you can use an online fundraising tool such as GOFUNDME to raise money for this item
- You can ask your local media to cover your efforts to feed families and not landfills through K-12 Food Rescue. Make sure you are able to share the graphics from the K-12 Food Rescue Story Graphic Log Tool to explain the impact of rescuing food.
